User Type Permissions Overview

Users derive their User Interface permissions from the User Type to which they are assigned. Use Management > User Setup > User Types to manage permissions for each User Type. These permissions govern activities or behaviors that map to UI actions in WorldServer.

The check boxes on this page work hierarchically: if you select (or clear) a check box, everything nested below it is also selected (or cleared). If you select a permission at the child level, all levels under which the permission is nested are selected. The converse of this is not true: if you clear a check box, the check boxes for the levels above this permission remain selected.

It is therefore advisable, if you want to create a User Type for a specific purpose, to work from the bottom up. For example, if you want to create a User Type for a user who will use the WorldServer Browser Workbench to translate assets, but you don’t want this user to be able to affect your translation memories, start by selecting the following permissions:

  • "In Browser Workbench" button
  • Can save asset
  • Home Tab
Note: If the Home Tab is not selected, the user with this User Type cannot access the WorldServer user interface, and will see the message "You are not allowed to access this page. Click the Back button to return to the previous page."

With these minimal permissions, a user of this User Type can log into WorldServer and perform a translation using the Browser Workbench. However, this user will not see the Save and Update TM button.

For AIS properties, Translation Memories, Terminology Databases, and Scoping/Costing Reports, User Type permission can be used in combination with Access Control Lists (ACLs) to further control who can do what. See the TM, TD, and Cost Model security topics for information about how ACLs can be used.
Note: Generally, the Admin user has full TM, TD, Cost Model, and AIS access control list (ACL) access with one exception: the WorldServer Explorer. If the ACL for the AIS node does not allow read permission to any user including Admin, then WorldServer displays a "You do not have read permission for this asset." message when you click on the AIS node in Explorer. This happens even if you log in as Admin. To resolve this issue, administrators can go to Management > Asset Interface System > View and Change Properties and reset the ACL.

Permissions are grouped into the following areas on the page:
