Working with Multilingual Excel Files

By default, the Bilingual Excel file type can handle Excel spreadsheets where the content is organized into columns for one source and one target language. However, you can also use it for spreadsheet content that requires translation into multiple languages. For example, a multilingual Excel sheet may contain an English source column, and three target columns, French, German and Japanese. Any additional columns containing reference information is extracted as comments or document structure information.

To translate the content of an Excel sheet organized into columns for multiple languages:

  1. Create a project for each target language available in your Excel spreadsheet. For example, start with creating a new project for the English-French language pair in the multilingual sheet.
  2. For each project, go to Project Settings > File Types > Bilingual Excel > Common and indicate the columns that contain the source and target language content for the first language pair. For example, English content is in Source Column A and French content will be placed into Translation column B.
  3. If your spreadsheet contains reference information in additional columns, configure the Bilingual File type to extract these as comments or document structure information.
  4. Open the project file and translate it into the specified target language.
  5. Use the Generate Target Translations batch task to add the translated content into the original Excel file.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the remaining language pairs in the Excel file.
